What is Vestibular Physiotherapy?

Our Vestibular Physiotherapist can assess and treat symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, or falls and balance issues.

Vestibular Physiotherapy is a specialised area of physio which deals with issues with the inner ear or Vestibular system, along with a focus on balance and falls prevention.

There are many causes of vertigo and getting to the root of the issue will assist with effective treatment.

Our vestibular physiotherapist can prescribe vestibular rehabilitation exercises which aim to improve dizziness and balance by re-training the vestibular system.

What are some of the conditions a Vestibular Physiotherapist can treat?

 
  • BPPV

  • Meniere’s disease

  • Vestibular labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis

  • Vestibular migraine

  • Post acoustic neuroma removal

  • Ototoxicity

  • Age-related balance dysfunction and falls risk

What to expect in your appointment

You will be asked questions about your symptoms, which could include any of the following

  • Dizziness or vertigo

  • Dizziness or blurred vision when you move your head

  • The world feeling like it is spinning at times

  • Feeling unbalanced or unsteady when walking

  • Light-headedness or giddiness when moving quickly

  • Nausea with movements

  • Falls, times when you have almost fallen, or being worried about falling

We will then complete a physical assessment (which includes use of Vesticam Infrared Goggles which allows us to see and record eye movements) and make reliable and well-informed clinical decisions about diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment options will depend on diagnosis, however, will be focused to what you want to achieve. This may include treatment for BPPV (repositioning maneuvers including the Epley), balance exercises, vestibular rehabilitation exercises and getting you moving confidently and comfortably again. There will also be a focus on gait and balance re-training and falls prevention.

Education

The biggest thing you will take away from an appointment is a greater understanding of your problem (whether this be dizziness, vertigo or imbalance). You will walk away feeling amazed at how incredible our bodies are and empowered to know how to manage your condition.

We will look to the future to ensure you return to being confident in movements and can sustain your balance over the long-term.

Do I need a referral?

A GP referral is not required. We will communicate with your GP (with your permission) after the assessment. Please call the clinic to book your initial appointment.
